Cate’s 2-1 victory over Villanova on Wednesday was the Rams’ first ever Frontier League win. The game needed nine innings to find a conclusion as Cate won in walk-off fashion.
Junior Jake Dexter-Meldrum singled home Dylan Ell for the game-winning run. Ell scored both of Cate’s runs having scored first on an RBI single by Harrison Murray that gave the Rams a 1-0 lead.
Villanova tied in the fifth. That was all the Wildcats could get against Joel Revo and Humza Khurshid. Revo went seven innings and struck out six batters. Djata Nyaawie, Dean Smith, Khurshid and Duffy Montgomery led Cate’s defensive effort.
“What a ballgame,” said Rams assistant coach David Soto. “We showed some serious fight to be able to grind out this win. There were several chances for us to win the game and when we didn’t execute, we didn’t hang our heads.”
The Rams travel to Villanova on Friday to complete the home-away league series.
