Jose Carrillo’s two-out single in the bottom of the eighth inning scored Tony Vega from third base and clinched a 4-3 Tri-Valley League victory for Carpinteria over Nordhoff.
The extra-inning win was the Warriors’ first TVL victory of the season and first in five years after Carpinteria spent the past four years in the Frontier League.
“It’s just a single win but it’s a pretty big deal for this group,” said Warriors head coach Pat Cooney. “The overall effort has been really good in the face of some big picture adversity. Nordhoff is a good bunch of players and the Warriors had to scrap for the opportunity to win. Good play plus a little luck equals win. It’s a small step in the right direction but a big boost of confidence.”
Robert Warren’s two-run double was a big part of Carpinteria’s three-run fifth inning. Sal Delgado delivered an RBI single earlier in the frame that scored Diego Contreras.
Contreras was Carpinteria’s starting pitcher, going six innings and leaving the game with the scored tied 3-3. David Martinez pitched two scoreless to earn the decision, working out of jams in each inning.
The Warriors are 1-2 in league play while Nordhoff falls to 3-2. The two teams meet again on Friday in Ojai.
