The San Marcos softball team picked up its first victory of the season in emphatic fashion on Thursday afternoon. The Royals defeated St. Joseph 12-1 in a non league matchup in Santa Maria.
“It was great to see the team break out with a nice hitting performance with eight out of nine starters getting hits,” said San Marcos head coach Jeff Swann.
The Royals were led by a fantastic performance from Aliyah Huerta-Leipner, who finished 3-for-4 with a home run, 2 RBIs and 3 runs scored. Along with this, Huerta-Leipner (1-0) pitched a gem with 5 strikeouts.
“More importantly, I was pleased to see that our defense played a solid game,” added Swann. “St. Joseph put the ball in play often, forcing our defense to complete several difficult plays.”
San Marcos had a big day at the plate, swatting 15 hits. Hailee Rios went 3-for-4 with two doubles and two runs scored. Cara Christian also went 3-for-4 and had two RBIs. Hailey Fryklund had a double and two RBIs, Sarah Douglas also drove in a pair of runs and had two hits while Sienna Berlinger hit a home run.
With the victory, the Royals improve to (1-1 overall) this season. San Marcos host Santa Paula on Saturday.
