San Marcos suffered a 1-0 Channel League loss to Buena on Tuesday in a game in which the Royals outhit the Bulldogs.
San Marcos held a 5-3 advantage in hits but failed to score with runners in scoring position in four different innings, including loading the bases in the first and seventh innings. The bases were full with one out in the seventh inning but two straight fly outs ended the game.
“We took a big step forward today in our maturity as a team, but we need to work on our execution and mental toughness to take advantage of every scoring opportunity,” commented San Marcos head coach Jeff Swann.
The game was scoreless until Buena pushed a run across in the bottom of the sixth inning.
The San Marcos defense didn’t commit an error to back up starting pitcher Hailee Rios, who struck out 12 batters in six innings. Lauren Pitchford was 2-3 at the plate.
