A couple of fielding miscues and facing Buena ace Austin Rubick were too much for San Marcos to overcome, as the Royals suffered a 5-1 loss in a Channel League baseball game on Tuesday.
Rubick, throwing in front of several scouts, fired a complete-game four-hitter. The Royals got to him for a run in the second inning. Sean Nakano-West singled, advanced to second on a fielder’s choice, reached third on a single by Derek Zylstra and scored on missed cutoff throws by the Bulldogs.
Buena (1-0 in league) tied the score in the third and took the lead in the fourth with three unearned runs. The Bulldogs added a run in the sixth with a solo homer.
San Marcos drops to 3-4 overall and 0-2 in league play. The Royals play a non-league game at Malibu on Friday.
