DENVER, Colo. – The 66th-ranked UC Santa Barbara men’s tennis team had its three-match winning streak ended at No. 41 Denver, 5-2.
The Gauchos (6-7), who were coming off of a 7-0 victory at Northern Colorado, dropped the doubles point and then fell in four of the six singles matches against the Pioneers (10-6).
UCSB’s wins came from Morgan Mays at No. 4 and Erik Johnsson at No. 6. Mays needed three sets to come back and defeat Denver’s Yannik James, 6-7, 7-3, 6-4. Johnsson was the team’s first winner on the afternoon as he swept Wyatt Lovera, 6-4, 7-6.
The Gauchos were close in two other matches. Cody Rakela dropped a 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 decision to Alex Gasson, while Diogo Rocha edged Nathan Eshmade, 3-6, 7-7, 12-10.
UCSB will complete its spring break road trip on Saturday, Mar. 26 when travels to Boise State for a match that will start at 10:00 a.m. (PDT).
