Westmont’s two-time national champion Elysia Mitchell and UCSB’s Alan Williams were announced as Athletes of the Week at the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table press luncheon on Monday.
Mitchell repeated at the NAIA Indoor National Championships in Geneva, Ohio by winning the 600 meters in 1:31.29. Mitchell’s victory makes her the first Warrior to repeat as national champion since Amber Nixon won the outdoor high jump in 2002 and 2003.
Mitchell also anchored the Warriors’ 4×400 relay team that set a new Westmont record while finishing fourth in the country. Westmont had never finished above 18th place as a team at NAIA Indoors and Mitchell’s performances helped lead Westmont to fifth place.
Williams scored 26 points and pulled down 19 rebounds in his final regular-season game as a Gaucho. UCSB’s all-time leading rebounder led UCSB to a win over rival Cal Poly in front of the Thunderdome’s biggest crowd of the season.
