Santa Barbara High scored four unanswered goals in the second half and defeated Dunn 9-6 in a boys lacrosse match on Saturday at Peabody Stadium.
“The boys clearly responded,” Santa Barbara coach Mike Terry said.
Junior attackman Atticus Shorr scored 4 goals and had 2 assists to lead the Dons.
Dunn came out firing at the start of the second half and took a 6-5 lead. Santa Barbara called a timeout to regroup.
“I told the boys we could not afford to come out flat in the second half. Dunn has some very talented players and we had to make sure they didn’t get hot,” Terry said. “I put the pressure on both my offense and defense. It is all about being able to play 60 minutes. The boys responded well. We went into the fourth quarter tied at 6 a piece. This was nothing new for us. We were in a similar situation with Simi Valley a couple of weeks ago. As we huddled up before the start of the fourth quarter, I said, ‘6-6, 12 minutes left, how do you want to feel after this game? How far are you willing to push yourself; we are our own home turf, now let’s go out there and protect it.’”
The Dons did just that.
Sophomore Will Becktol led the defense, making some timely stops, which gave the offense opportunities to put the ball in the back of the net.
Elyjah Klopp scored 3 goals and Porter Rees and and Hans Feedyk each added a goal for Santa Barbara.
“I’ve been asking my guys to play 60 minutes since the first day of practice. We were finally able to put four quarters together and come away with a 9-6 victory over a very talented team in Dunn,” said Terry.
