The calendar turned to March on Sunday and Jonny Hogan continued his red-hot play on the golf course.
SBCC’s sophomore sensation shot par or better for the fifth straight round and took medalist honors at 3-under 69 in the first round of the Point Conception Open men’s golf tournament at Marshallia Ranch on Vandenberg AFB. Dan Godin of Reedley was the runner-up at 72.
Hogan has shot under par in his last three rounds and has been the medalist each time. He’s averaging 70.6 in five rounds for the season.
Reedley leads the 14-team field in the 36-hole, two-day event at 379 (75.8 average). Canyons Blue team is second at 381 and SBCC is tied for third with Riverside at 387.
Brett Patton shot 78 for the Vaqueros and Jaren McCartney posted a 79.
“The conditions were good at first, then got tougher later with wind and rain,” said SBCC coach Chuck Melendez. “This is a difficult course, you can get into trouble on any hole. Hopefully, things will be a little easier on Monday. I still think we’re just scratching the surface of our capabilities.”
The final round will be played Monday at La Purisima GC near Lompoc, starting at 8:30 a.m.
