San Marcos finished strong at the Redondo Union boys volleyball tournament on Saturday, beating Simi Valley, 25-13, 25-18, to finish in fifth place in the gold bracket.
The Royals lost only one match in the two-day event, a three-set quarterfinal battle with Servite, 25-17, 22-25, 15-13. The started the day with a win over Cathedral, 25-23, 25-15.
“The team played extremely well both days against some really good teams,” coach Jon Newton said. “The guys went from a group of individuals on a volleyball court to playing together as a team. This isn’t the same San Marcos team that everyone saw last year and in no way is that a bad thing.”
Kevin Peters was the team’s kill leader in the tournament with 40 kills on the right side. Jake Pighetti had 26 and Connor Everman added 19 and Ian McLain 20 kills out of the middle.
“Greg Kronen ran a good offense all weekend by distributing the ball well and being offensive at the net,” Newton said. “Sean Estabrooks led the team in passing and digging from the libero position, passing a 2.4 throughout the weekend and totaling 42 digs.
The Royals are home Tuesday against South Pasadena.
