Dos Pueblos triumphed over Royal 15-13 in the fifth set of an intense non-league match in Sovine Gym on Friday night.
“DP and Royal have a long history of going the distance and tonight was just the next chapter in a long and very entertaining book of competitive boys high school volleyball,” said Chargers head coach Ehren Hug.
Dos Pueblos rallied in the fifth set after falling behind 11-7. The comeback was highlighted by an Elliot Brainerd kill off a reverse set by Mark Raphael started by a perfect pass by Will Parker.
“The Chargers pulled to 12 all, kicked, scratched, and found themselves up 14-13 when a Royal attacker hit a ball long and DP was the winner,” Hug described.
Eli Wopat finished with a team-high 21 kills and four blocks. Jack Burns added 10 kills and Brainerd seven. CD Sullivan had six kills and some athletic scramble plays in the back row to keep some key points alive.
“Our boys kept fighting tonight,” Hug said. “Our boys made mistakes tonight, but they got past them and kept competing. I’m proud of the way they responded when they were down and kept the belief alive.”
Dos Pueblos plays next at Oxnard on Tuesday.
