Santa Barbara High faced some tough teams from Northern California and went 1-3 in the top division at the California Tennis Classic in Fresno over the weekend.
“This was the toughest competition I have seen in the six years we have participated in this tournament and I am pleased with how our players competed against top level competition,” Dons coach Greg Tebbe said.
Two of Santa Barbara’s losses were decided by tiebreakers. They dropped 4-3 decisions against Homestead of Cupertino and Menlo-Atherton. The Dons opened with a 4-3 win over Davis and lost to top-seeded Menlo of Menlo Park, 7-0.
“Three of our four matches came down to the final match and the two we lost came down to a final-set super tiebreaker,” said Tebbe.
Tebbe said the level of competition will only make the Dons better.
“We played four tough matches in two days and this high quality tennis will help prepare us for the remainder of our season,” he said.
Santa Barbara opens Channel League play this week against rivals San Marcos and Dos Pueblos at home. The Dons play the Royals on Wednesday and the Chargers on Thursday.
