The Carpinteria boys tennis team picked up its second consecutive victory with a tight 10-8 win over Bishop Diego in a non-league matchup on Tuesday afternoon at the Muni Courts.
“Today, our level of heightened awareness really helped us out in the end,” said Warriors head coach Charles Bryant. “Our guys had a great third round to give us the team win.”
Carpinteria was led by its doubles teams, which allowed the Warriors to squeak out the victory versus the Cardinals. The duo of Bryan Taira with Jeremy Saito went 3-0 without dropping a game. The doubles teams of Francis Aguilera matched with Juan Hernandez and Sam Truax paired with Jacob Ascencio each went 2-1 respectively.
“I was impressed with our level of interest in this match,” added coach Bryant. “The boys were very into the match and kept checking the scores to know what was at stake.”
Bishop Diego’s No. 1 singles player Spencer Ekola went 3-0 without dropping a game. Mikey Kelly went 2-1 on the day in singles play. In doubles, the teams of Jake Stratford paired with either Jones or Cameron Roberts went 2-1 respectively.
“It was a very close contest today and the match could have gone either way,” said Cardinals head coach Debbie Ekola. ”Our doubles teams need more work and match experience. We will be working hard in the coming weeks to improve our doubles skills.”
With the victory, the Warriors improve to 2-2 overall on the season.
On the other hand, Bishop Diego falls to 1-1. The Cardinals play host to St. Bonaventure on Thursday.
