The Bishop Diego opened their season with a 12-6 victory over St. Bonaventure in a Frontier League boys tennis match on Thursday afternoon at Ventura College.
“The boys really played well today considering we just started practice two and a half weeks ago,” said Cardinals head coach Debbie Ekola.
Bishop Diego was led by No. 1 singles player Spencer Ekola, who never dropped a game, winning all 3 sets 6-0. Mikey Kelly and Christen Vasquez each went 2-1 respectively. In the doubles department, the team of Jake Stratford paired with either Jones or Cameron Roberts went 3-0.
“Despite having only five returning players, I think we have another chance to compete for the league championship,” added coach Ekola. “This year, we have more depth in both singles and doubles. ”
Bishop Diego matches up with Carpinteria at the Muni Courts on Tuesday.
