BTen: Chargers win another close match

Dos Pueblos’ boys tennis team has a knack for winning the close ones. The Chargers did it again on Monday in a 9-9 draw with San Luis Obispo that was decided in Dos Pueblos’ favor based on a 89-79 advantage in games.

It was the third match of the season that Dos Pueblos has won in a tiebreaker after a 9-9 tie.

Both teams dealt with windy conditions that changed the flight of balls and kicked dust into the air.

The Chargers prevailed by winning seven of nine singles sets. Miles Baldwin swept three sets while Patrick Corpuz won two of three. Corpuz still gained six games for the team in his 7-6 loss. Joshua Wang won his opening set 6-1 and then split his last two while battling an onset of cramps.

Quinn Hensley and Vincent Villano won a key set in the third round decided in a tiebreaker.

“I am proud of this team, who battled to the end. Even cramps will not stop them from competing,” said Chargers head coach Liz Frech.

Dos Pueblos (7-3) plays again on Tuesday, hosting Cate at 3 p.m. in a non-league match.
