WTen: Warriors get GSAC win over depleted Vanguard

(COSTA MESA, Calif.) The #12 Westmont women’s tennis team (5-2, 3-1 GSAC) had a very convincing 8-1 win in Costa Mesa this afternoon against #11 Vanguard University (2-4, 2-2 GSAC).

Today was an interesting match for the Warriors because the Lions had to forfeit two singles and a double match due to illness and injury. Since the Lions only had four players, the Warriors automatically went up 3-0.

Despite the defaulted points earned, the Warriors did not let up. The women played very strong and consistent tennis. In singles play, Lauren Stratman swept her opponent 6-0, 6-0 in the number one position. Inez Costamagna only dropped one point to the Lions in a 6-0, 6-1 victory. Strandness defeated Sullivan 6-3, 6-3 on the third court. Emily Keach dropped her sets 1-6, 1-6 to Vanguards Ferslov-Jensen in the final singles match of the day.

Doubles play was just as dominant as Stratman and Costamagna swept Edwards and Sullivan 8-0. Alyson Meyer and Haley Strandness defeated their opponents 9-7 in the tightest match of the day.

The Warriors now progress to 3-1 in GSAC play. They will back at home to host San Diego Christian this Friday February 20 at noon.
