SBHS teams, Bishop girls, San Marcos boys seeded for CIF playoffs

Jordyn Lilly leads the Bishop Diego girls into the CIF 5A Division playoffs. The Cardinals are the division’s No. 2-seeded team.

 

The Santa Barbara High boys and girls basketball teams, along with the San Marcos boys and Bishop Diego girls, were awarded top four seeds in their respective divisions for the CIF-SS playoffs.

Santa Barbara’s boys are seeded second in Division 2A. The Channel League champions (25-4) will open the postseason at home against Royal (11-15) on Friday at 7 p.m. Royal is an at-large team from the Coastal Canyon League. La Mirada is the No. 1 seed in the division.

San Marcos lost in a playoff for third place in the Channel League, but the Royals (19-8) nabbed the fourth seed in Division 3AA. They open Wednesday at Firebaugh (Prep No. 2, 16-8) in Compton.

After winning the Division 3AA championship last year for the first CIF-Southern Section title in program history, the Santa Barbara girls were moved up to Division 2AA. The Dons (20-5) received the division’s No. 4 seed and begin their quest for a repeat at home against San Gabriel (Almont League No. 2, 17-10) on Saturday night. Bay League rivals Redondo Union and Mira Costa are the top two seeds in the division and Eisenhower is third.

Bishop Diego (18-8), an at-large team after finishing tied for third in the Tri-Valley League, was seeded second in the 5A girls bracket. The Cardinals begin their playoff run on Thursday at home against AGBU of Pasadena (Westside at-large, 7-8).

BOYS
Bishop Diego, Laguna Blanca and Providence are in the playoffs and open on Wednesday.

Condor League-champion Laguna Blanca (12-8) will be home for its Division 5A first rounder against St. Bernard (Del Rey at-large, 10-17). Also in 5A, Bishop Diego (Tri-Valley at-large, 9-18) visits Coast Union in Cambria (Coast Valley No. 1, 17-4).

Providence received a first-round home game in Division 6. The Patriots (Condor No. 3, 11-10) play host to Shandon (Coast Valley No. 3, 13-6) at a site to be determined.

GIRLS
Dos Pueblos, Providence and Cate received at-large bids and will open on the road, while Frontier League-champion Carpinteria will be at home.

The Warriors (14-8) take on Paraclete (Gold Coast at-large, 12-10) on Thursday in Division 4A. The Gold Coast League includes powerhouse teams Sierra Canyon and Windward.

Dos Pueblos (11-11) travels to eighth-seeded Cerritos (Suburban No. .2, 19-7) for a Division 2A first-round game on Saturday.

Providence and Cate are playing in Division 5AA. Providence (Condor No. 2, 7-3) visits fourth-seeded Mission Prep of San Luis Obispo (Pac 8 No. 2, 16-8) and Cate (Condor No. 4, 11-9) travels to Providence Burbank (Liberty No. 1, 20-7) on Thursday.
