UC Santa Barbara senior outfielder Cameron Newell has been named the Big West Field Player of the Week, the league announced on Monday morning.
Newell had a career week over UCSB’s four games last week, helping the team to a Monday win over BYU and a series win against Kentucky for a 3-1 overall record.
For the week, Newell went 11-17 for a .647 batting average. He had multiple hits in all four games and had three hits in all but one contest while also clubbing his first career home run.
A heart-of-the-order bat, Newell got the week started with a 3-4, one RBI performance against the Cougars. He then clubbed a home run, double, and scored three runs in Friday’s series opener against UK before crossing the plate three more times on Saturday. He finished up the series against the Wildcats with three base hits on Sunday.
This is the second career weekly honor for the Roseburg, Ore. native. He received the same honor in Apr. 2013 after hitting .643 in four games against USD and UC Riverside.
In addition to Newell’s award, UCSBGauchos.com is also pleased to announce that it will carry an audio broadcast of Tuesday afternoon’s contest against Pepperdine. UCSB, which is ranked as high as No. 16 in the nation, will send Domenic Mazza to the mound looking for his second consecutive win after allowing one earned run in 5 2/3 innings against BYU last week
