Orange Coast jumped ahead 10-4 and 21-8 in the first set on Friday night and went on to sweep SBCC 25-12, 25-21, 25-19 in a men’s volleyball match at Costa Mesa.
Shaft Wesley had 11 kills and Sean Reynaert added seven kills and hit .429. Casey Alper had nine digs and Keaton Arutian handed out 21 assists with seven digs for the Vaqueros (4-2), who had their four-game win streak snapped. The defending state champion Pirates are 2-3.
The Vaqueros had some travel problems, due to heavy traffic, and the match started more than an hour after the 6 p.m. scheduled time.
“We don’t make excuses,” said coach Matt Jones. “We did look pretty slow to start the match but we settled in during the second and third sets. This is a good team and they have a middle, Nick Amado, who we couldn’t stop. He made the rest of their offense go.
“It took us a while to figure out where to hit the ball and where the mismatches were.”
SBCC got within two in the second set (23-21) on two straight kills by Reynaert and led early in the third but OCC answered with runs each time.
The Vaqueros travel back to Orange County on Friday, Feb. 20 to take on Golden West at 6 p.m. in their final non-conference match.
