GSoc: No. 4 Arroyo Grande too much for Royals

San Marcos’ season came to end on Thursday in the first round of the CIF Division 3 playoff as the Royals came up against undefeated Arroyo Grande. The Royals succumbed 4-0 to the fourth-seeded Eagles.

San Marcos’ defense held Arroyo Grande (22-0-3) scoreless through the first 32 minutes but the Eagles finally broke through. They quickly added another goal on a penalty kick two minutes later.

Royals head coach Macie Berlin praised the defensive play by Natalie Widmer and Melanie Miller. Chloe Hamer and Danielle Anderson impressed their coach trying to create opportunities.

Alas, Arroyo Grande was able to complete its fifth straight shutout.

“What I will say is that the last part of the game was the best part of our game,” Berlin said. “Everyone worked together – no we didn’t score a goal, but we played well for 25 minutes. Obviously, that isn’t enough, but I was proud to have a team of girls who didn’t give up.”

San Marcos, which finished in third place in the Channel League, finishes its season with a record of 6-9-2.
