San Marcos’ girls soccer team was defeated by Buena 3-1 in a Channel League matchup at Warkentin Stadium on Tuesday night.
“I’m proud of the effort the girls put in tonight,” said Royals head coach Macie Berlin. “They are always a tough team and I thought my girls kept them from being confident against us throughout the match.”
In the 11th minute, San Marcos scored on a goal from Chloe Hamer to take a 1-0 lead. Olivia Jones sliced a pass across the box to Hamer who finished it.
Buena quickly responded with a goal of their own in the 28th minute. The Bulldogs also scored early in the second half to take a 2-1 lead.
“Little mistakes hurt us, but I couldn’t have asked for more effort,” added coach Berlin “With a short bench, most of the girls on the field played almost the entire game, but not one of them stopped working hard.”
The Royals continually knocked on the door trying to even the game. With only five minutes remaining, Jones looked as if she was setting up the game-tying set piece when she went down hard just outside of the box. However, no call was made to the dismay of Berlin.
Immediately afterward, Buena pushed down the field and scored the final goal against a stunned Royals’ defense.
Berlin gave high praise to junior defender Tasha Wood for holding the Bulldogs back offensively.
With the loss, San Marcos falls to (2-4 league). The Royals travel on the road to face Dos Pueblos next Tuesday.
