INDUSTRY HILLS – Sophomore Will Strauss shot a 6-over par 222 to tie for ninth-place, leading UC Santa Barbara to a third-place team finish at the Folino Invitational at the Industry Hills Golf Club on Tuesday.
Strauss carded a 1-under par 71 in the third and final round to leapfrog 10 players and move from 21st-place to ninth. The 71 was the lowest round of the tournament by a Gaucho player. UCSB finished 35-over par as a team, just one-shot back of Seattle. Sacramento State ran away with the team title at 11-over par, 23 shots better than the runner-up Redhawks.
Freshmen Brandon Bauman and Willy Moffly gave the Gauchos two more top-20 finishers. Bauman tied for 16th with a 9-over par 225 while Moffly was 18th with 10-over par 226. Another freshman, Andrew Kitchner, was tied for 29th at 15-over par, while senior Hunter Robinson finished tied for 37th-place at 17 above the break-even mark.
Ty Travis of Boise State and a pair of Sacramento State players, Taylor Knoll and Aaron Beverly, tied for the individual medalist honors. The trio of players each carded a 1-under par 215, three shots better than Nate Ollis of the University of British Columbia.
UCSB resumes play on Friday, Feb. 20-Sunday, Feb. 22 when it travels to the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate which will be played at The Classic Club in Palm Desert, Calif.
