Carpinteria’s defense overwhelmed Malibu, leading to a 40-24 victory in a Frontier League girls basketball game on Thursday.
The win, combined with Foothill Tech’s loss against Cate, puts the Warriors in sole possession of first place in the league at 9-2; they are 12-7 overall.
Tori Kelley scored 14 points and had nine steals to lead Carpinteria. Maddie Cleek added 12 points and three steals and Monique Sanchez finished with 10 points and seven steals
The Warriors led by 25 points before coach Dan Mercer cleared his bench in the fourth quarter.
“It was a good team win,” he said.
Carpinteria plays Fillmore on Saturday.
