Brittany Newsome scored 23 points and Elan Halpern added 16 to lead Cate to a 53-45 girls baseketball win over Frontier League-champion Carpinteria on Thursday night, snapping the Warriors’ 11-game win streak.
The win by Cate puts them in a one-game playoff against Foothill Tech for the final playoff spot in the Frontier League. The game will be played at 5 p.m. at St. Bonaventure.
“They just played a whale of a game,” Carpinteria coach Dan Mercer said of the Rams. “They had us by nine points with four minutes to go. We made a run and cut it to two with two minutes and had a shot to tied it but it didn’t fall.”
Tori Kelley, who was harassed all night by Cate, still managed to scored 20 points, grab seven rebounds and come up with six steals. Monique Sanchez had 14 points.
Carpinteria finishes the regular season at 14-8 and 11-3 in league. The Warriors will learn their CIF playoff draw on Sunday.
