Bishop Diego broke open a close game with a nine-point run at the end of the second quarter and defeated St. Bernard’s 58-32 in a second-round game of the CIF Division 5A girls basketball playoffs on Saturday.
The Cardinals were clinging to a 19-18 lead before they took over the game. The momentum carried over into the third period as they outscored the Vikings 17-5.
“We outscored them 31-11 in the second and third quarters,” said coach Jeff Burich.
Burich said his entire starting five (Jordyn Lilly, Hannah Rogers, Morgan Wallace, Summer Soto and Sienna Gonzalez) played a solid game. Lilly led Bishop with 21 points, 15 of them coming in the second half. Rogers had nine points, Soto added nine and Gonzalez scored six points during the big third-quarter run.
Defensively, Burich said Soto, Lilly and Wallace “played great on top.” St. Bernard’s was a guard-oriented team and they did a great job keeping them out of the paint and made shots hard for them.”
The Cardinals (20-8) advance to the quarterfinals and play at Pacifica Christian in Santa Monica on Wednesday.
