Bishop Diego stepped up its defensive intensity and shut down La Reina, winning 52-27 in a Frontier League girls basketball game Tuesday night at Bishop.
The win puts the Cardinals over .500 in league at 5-4 — tied with La Reina for third — and improves their overall record to 17-8.
The Cardinals went on a 16-0 run to break open the game in the first quarter. They led 28-15 at halftime and then went on a 16-2 run in the third quarter to take a 44-17 lead.
“We made a nice defensive adjustment near the end of the second quarter,” Bishop coach Jeff Burich said. “We put Jordyn (Lilly) on their post player, who had scored eight points in the second quarter. Jordyn shut out her out for the rest of the game. It was a nice defensive effort.”
Lilly and Hannah Rogers paced a balanced Bishop offense with 14 points apiece. Morgan Wallace had 10 points, Sienna Gonzalez tallied 9 and Summer Soto contributed five.
Burich praised the defensive work of Soto. “She was all over the floor defensively, getting after loose balls,” he said.
He added: “I’m very pleased how we played from start to finish; we played 32 minutes of good basketball.”
The Cardinals will hold their Senior Night on Thursday against Santa Paula.
