San Marcos’ Kento Perera swept three sets on Friday for the Royals but San Luis Obispo had better luck elsewhere in an 11-6 non-league win for the Tigers.
On a windy and cold day up north, San Luis Obispo won two close matches in the first round to take 1 4-2 lead that the Royals never recovered from.
“We battled in the first round, ultimately losing two sets by only a break, but that sort of took the wind out of us, no pun intended,” said Royals head coach Jarrod Bradley.
Cody Krueger and Lars Scannell teamed in doubles to win three sets 6-4, 7-6(3) 6-0.
“Lars and Cody improved throughout the day. Cody served effectively while Lars closed the net off in dominating fashion,” Bradley said.
Their tiebreak win came after giving up a 5-2 lead in the set.
“Cody and Lars let off the proverbial gas pedal but pulled it together in the tiebreak. I look forward to seeing them both play with more energy and urgency.”
No Tigers players enjoyed sweeps on the day but SLO was consistent with two wins at five of six lineup positions. It was the season opener for San Luis Obispo (1-0).
San Marcos (1-2) has two matches next week, at Valencia on Wednesday and at Laguna Blanca on Friday.
