Damien Nunez scored twice, and Laguna Blanca jumped on Calvary Murrieta for three goals in the first half en route to a 4-0 victory in a CIF Division 7 boys soccer second-round match Wednesday in Temecula.
The win advances the Owls to a quarterfinal match on Friday against third-seeded the Webb School at Laguna Blanca. Webb blanked Riverside Prep 3-0 in the second round.
Ethan Tyng had three assists and Cooper had one.
Tyng fed Nunez for the first goal in the 10th minute. McNeel made it 2-0, scoring off a corner kick from Cooper in the 20th minute. Nunez made it 3-0 three minutes later, finishing a nice combination with Tyng.
“I thought we played an excellent first half,” Laguna coach Daniel Torres said. “The guys came out firing. We were knocking the ball around and created numerous chances.”
Calvary stepped up its attack in the second half, but goalkeeper Mikey Hawker was up to the task.
“I told the boys that Calvary was going to come out and attack us and they did,” Torres said. “We weathered the storm, and that’s what I asked from the boys. Mikey Hawker killed their aspirations.”
Curran scored his goal in the 66th minute, taking a feed from Tyng and beating the goalkeeper from the top corner of the 18-yard box.
Torres was excited about the shutout.
“We didn’t want to give up any goals,” he said. “The win is great, the shutout is just as great because we’ve had trouble shutting out teams.”
Torres said everything has come together for the team.
“We’re having fun and competing and trying to make the best of out our CIF run,” he said
