Dos Pueblos wrapped up an outright Channel League boys soccer title with a 1-1 draw against visiting Buena on Thursday night at Scott O’Leary Stadium.
The result gives the Chargers a 6-0-1 record (19 points) with one match to play against San Marcos.
Dos Pueblos fought off a fired-up Buena team in the first half and kept the game scoreless
“I think the first half was marred by a lot of technical errors for us and Buena came out with great energy and enthusiasm which we did not match,” said DP coach Matt York.
The Chargers regrouped at halftime and took a 1-0 lead in the second half. Tim Heiduk scored the goal. The senior captain collected a deep throw-in, muscled his way around a defender before shooting the ball over the goalkeeper.
Buena scored the equalizer, capitalizing on a DP turnover in the back. The Bulldogs’ playmaker went one-on-one with the goalkeeper and blasted a shot for the tying goal.
The Bulldogs had a player ejected with six minutes remaining, “but their spirit and effort kept us out of the back of the net,” said York. “We ended in a tie, so our Channel League title came with a bitter taste in our mouth. We look forward to some tough training before finishing our season against our rivals San Marcos on Tuesday.”
