Injuries to a couple of starters forced Cate soccer coach Peter Mack to revamp his lineup Monday for the Rams’ game against Bishop Diego.
Cate didn’t show any letup in the attack as it peppered Bishop with 35 shots in a 5-1 victory.
Joel Serugo moved from center back to forward and scored two goals and had an assist.
“We had to move around some pieces today to account for the loss of Iman Fardghassemi and Ryan Borchardt,” Cate coach Peter Mack said. “Some guys played out of position, and Serugo was called on to replace some of our lost scoring punch up front.”
Serugo finished off a cross from Geoffrey Acheampong in the 19th minute and scored again four minutes later when he went in unassisted and ripped a far post shot after beating two Bishop defenders.
The Rams came out flat in the second half and seemed caught off guard when a Bishop attacker took the ball out of the air from 20 yards and buried it in the upper far left corner.
The momentum swung Bishop’s way for next few minutes, but in the 54th minute Christian Herman finished Acheampong’s cross to make it 3-1, and then the Rams reverted to first half form. In the 60th minute, Ben Jessup headed home a goal on the far post off a pass from Serugo, and then Gair Pearson slotted home a goal in 78th minute after Acheampong selflessly set him up on the right side.
“I am really pleased with how we responded today after our battle Friday with Carpinteria, especially with no time to prepare for the loss of Iman and Ryan.
The win puts us at 10-2-2 on the season with one more league match to play–against Nordhoff this Wednesday on the Mesa.
