LA MIRADA — Junior guard Krissy Karr poured in 25 points as #16 Westmont Women’s Basketball (17-3, 4-3 GSAC) posted a 67-49 Golden State Athletic Conference win over the Eagles of Biola (12-9, 4-3) on Tuesday night in La Mirada. Karr made six of 12 attempts from three points range. She also tallied four rebounds and three assists.
Westmont came into Chase Gymnasium with guns blazing and put up a quick 11-0 lead in less than three minutes. On each of its first three possessions, the Warriors scorched the net from long distance with Karr, Celina Gougis (3 points, 10 rebounds) and Esther Lee (11 points, 5 assists) hitting threes in succession.
Aysia Shellmire (8 points, 7 rebounds) scored a layup on the Warriors’ next possession before Biola’s Chelsea Hill (9 points, 3 rebounds) point the Eagles’ first points on the board. A layup by Lauren McCoy (14 points, 8 rebounds) made it five straight scoring possessions to start the game and gave Westmont a 13-2 advantage.
However, Biola fought back with a 10-3 run over the next four and one-half minutes to pull within one (16-15). With 6:41 remaining in the opening frame, the Eagles’ Demoria White (5 points) nailed a three-pointer to give Biola its only lead of the game at 20-19.
The Warriors, however, reignited and scored 14 of the next 16 points consisting of a trio of three-point field goals from Karr, another from Lee and a layup by Shellmire. By halftime, Westmont had put together a 42-27 lead. Westmont maintained a double-digit lead throughout the second half.
Biola was led in scoring by Annie Park who recorded 18 points and three rebounds.
The win moves the Warriors into a tie with the Eagles for fourth place in the GSAC standings. Ninth-ranked Concordia (14-3) sits atop the conference with a perfect GSAC record of 7-0 while #16 The Master’s (14-4) claims second with a 5-1 conference mark. At third in the GSAC standings is #13 Vanguard (12-4) at 5-2 in conference play.
Westmont will finish its first trip through the GSAC schedule when it travels to Fullerton on Saturday to take on the Royals of Hope International (11-8, 2-3).
