SBCC recorded its first two men’s volleyball wins on Saturday, knocking off San Diego City and Grossmont by identical 3-1 scores at the L.A. Pierce Quad in Woodland Hills.
The Vaqueros (2-1) took the first match 25-14, 25-22, 19-25, 25-11 and rallied to down the Griffins 24-26, 25-23, 25-20, 25-14.
Kiel DeTurk led a balanced attack in the San Diego match with nine kills and a .318 hitting percentage. Taylor McCluskey and Jaiden Pina added eight kills apiece with McCluskey recording nine digs. Setter Kyle Smiley had 30 assists and six aces.
“We did a good job of keeping our serves in and using our middles early,” said coach Matt Jones. “Robert Gulvin did a nice job of blocking in his first match of the season.”
McCluskey had a season-high 24 kills and hit .340 in the win over Grossmont. The 6-3 freshman from Mission Viejo also had nine digs and three aces. Sean Reynaert posted a double-double with 11 kills, 11 digs and six blocks.
To’o To’o had 12 kills and hit .476 in the middle. He also had four aces.
Casey Alper notched a season-high 20 digs while 6-9 Jeremy Berch had hit .500 with seven kills and seven blocks.
The Vaqueros will host Palomar in their home opener on Friday at 6 p.m.
