Oxnard forced 26 turnovers on Saturday on the way to an 83-54 triumph that spoiled SBCC’s WSC North men’s basketball debut. The Condors only committed nine turnovers and enjoyed a 39-7 advantage in points off turnovers.
“We didn’t take care of the basketball and we had 13 first-half turnovers that led to a lot of fast-break chances,” said coach Morris Hodges.
Thomas Walker scored 15 of his team-high 17 points in the first half for the visiting Vaqueros (4-9, 0-1). The 6-7 sophomore center from Aliso Viejo also had a season-best 13 rebounds. He posted a double-double (15 points, 11 rebounds) in the first half. Ty Cleland added 10 points and four rebounds.
There were six ties and seven lead changes in the opening half before the Condors (2-10, 1-1) took control. They outscored the Vaqueros 15-8 in the last 6:20 of the first half to build a 41-28 lead.
The teams shot a similar percentage from the field with Oxnard leading 43.7 to 41.2 percent. The Condors hit 10-24 from 3-point land while the Vaqueros were 3-11. SBCC made just over half of its free throws (9-16).
Isiah Morales topped Oxnard with 23 points, 10 rebounds and seven of his team’s 20 steals.
The Vaqueros will host Moorpark on Wednesday at 5 p.m.
