Dos Pueblos played with CIF Division 1AA-ranked Ventura for a half before the Cougars used their size advantage and wore down the Chargers, 54-34, in Channel League girls basketball opener on Tuesday night at Ventura.
Dos Pueblos was down 22-16 at halftime. Then Barbara Rangel, Ventura’s 6-4 post player, took over the game. She scored 10 straight points in the third quarter to put the Cougars up by 16.
“Our tallest player is 5-9,” DP coach Phil Sherman said. “They kept feeding (Rangel) the ball.”
Camila Casanueva scored 17 points and Devan Staggs led DP (8-5, 0-1).
The Chargers play at Santa Barbara on Thursday.
