Bishop Diego was back at full strength, and the Cardinals put together a solid performance in beating Santa Paula, 47-34, in a Tri-Valley League girls basketball game on Tuesday.
Hannah Rogers led the way for Bishop with 18 points and 16 rebounds. Jordyn Lilly had 13 points, 10 coming in the third quarter, and grabbed nine rebounds.
“The kids did a nice job getting the ball inside to Hannah, which opened things up,” Bishop coach Jeff Burich said “They went to a box-and-one (defense) on Jordyn.”
Summer Soto and Deja Goodwin took advantage of open opportunities in the second quarter. Soto hit a 3-pointer and Goodwin scored five points, helping the Cardinals extend their lead to 30-16.
“It was nice to see kids step up and hit open shots,” said Burich.
The coach noted that all five starters were back on the court for the first time in two weeks. The team went through some injuries and illness.
“It was nice to get that continuity back,” he said.
The Cardinals (15-5, 3-2) play at Santa Clara in a battle for second play in the TVL on Thursday.
