Celso Lagunas’ goal in the 23rd minute was all that was needed for Santa Barbara High on Tuesday as the Dons defeated Ventura 1-0.
Lagunas scored off an assist by Juan Zarate. He beat his defender and let go a shot from just inside the corner of the penalty box that curved over the goalie to the far post.
Angel Cervantes picked up the shutout – the team’s ninth on the season – defending the goal. Sophomore Sloan Hanson made his first start and played well on the back line according to head coach Todd Heil.
Santa Barbara (12-3-4, 2-1-0) hosts San Marcos on Saturday at 7 p.m. in Peabody Stadium.
