Patrick Prestridge scored in the final two minutes of overtime to lift Cate to a 3-2 boys soccer win over Bishop Diego in a Tri-Valley League match on Friday at Bishop.
The Rams held a 2-0 lead, but Bishop fought back and got a goal in the 21st minute and tied the scored in the 62nd minute, capitalizing on a Cate turnover.
Cate created numerous scoring chances late in the game but couldn’t get many clear shots on frame.
“Bishop Diego fought us for every inch of space and we didn’t respond the way I’d hoped we would,” Cate coach Peter Mack said. “We simply got outworked today for the majority of the game. In the end, we got a little lucky. It’s not often you can escape with a win in this league when you don’t play a full and furious 80 minutes. I’m hoping we learned an important lesson.”
The Rams, who outshot Bishop 25-8, got off to a fast start, scoring shortly after the kickoff. Geoffrey Acheampong found Iman Fardghassemi with a long ball down the right side and Fardghassemi crossed it into the 18-yard box. The ball deflected off Cardinal defender and into the net for a 1-0 lead.
Fardghassemi struck again 15 minutes later on a set piece from Acheampong.
Bishop took advantage of a breakdown in Cate’s defensive end and scored to make it 2-1.
Cate struggled to possess the ball in the second half as the Cardinal defenders repeatedly swarmed it. Bishop converted a Cate turnover into the tying goal.
Cate improves to 6-2-1 on the season and 3-1 in league play.
