Three first-half goals for Cate’s boys soccer team was more than enough on Friday to deliver the Rams their first Tri-Valley League victory in school history, a 3-0 win over Malibu.
Cate switched from the Condor League to the TVL during the offseason.
Geoffrey Acheampong provided two assists while setting up Cate’s first two goals. Djata Nyaawie struck first in the 17th minute by sending home a cross to the back post. Then it was Christian Herman nine minutes later off another Acheampong pass that gave Cate a 2-0 lead.
Two minutes before halftime, Iman Fardghassemi added an unassisted blast to make the score 3-0.
“After Wednesday’s draining overtime loss to Santa Paula, I wasn’t entirely sure how we’d start the game today,” said Rams head coach Peter Mack. “Happily, we opened with good pace and stifling midfield defense, which set the tone for the day. We also produced several pretty combinations that led to dangerous opportunities for us.”
Cate is now 4-2-1, 1-1.
