San Marcos completed a perfect first week of the Channel League season on Friday with a 54-44 victory at Buena.
It’s only been two games, but the Royals sit on top of the Channel League standings with a 2-0 record.
San Marcos needed a late 12-0 run to remain unbeaten. Buena led 40-37 with four minutes in the fourth quarter until the Royals went on their run.
“We got gritty, the boys did what they needed to do to get the win,” reported Royals head coach Landon Boucher. “Connor Everman was huge for us scoring six points in the last 4 minutes. Our defense has continued to be our catalyst in tight games, the way the boys are helping each other out on the defensive end has been pretty special. These guys really care about each other, and it shows.”
Kele Mkpado’s 14 points and 10 rebounds were both team-highs. Ryan McCarthy added 12 points and five rebounds. Scott Everman finished with 10 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Connor Everman totaled nine points.
San Marcos plays next on Monday in a non-league game against Workman. The game time has been changed to 5 p.m.
