Cate lost a 45-44 decision against Grace Brethren in a Frontier League boys basketball that was decided in the final seconds Monday night.
The Rams were down by 11 (39-28) going into the fourth quarter. They thought they pulled to within two when freshman Marko Piliso hit a 3-pointer. But the officials ruled it was two-point shot and the deficit was three points.
Cate fouled and Grace Brethren missed both free throws with 14 seconds left. The Rams cleared for sophomore Nick Thomas and he drove the lane and scored to make it a one-point game. They fouled with two seconds remaining and the Lancers missed the front end of a one-and-one situation. Cate rebounded and missed a shot at the buzzer.
“It was a heart-breaking loss at the buzzer,” Cate coach Bryan Rodriguez said.
Pliso led the Rams with 17 points, while Thomas finished with 12 points
