Westmont dropped its second Golden State Athletic Conference women’s basketball game in a row, falling to Concordia, 83-76, on Saturday night at Murchison Gym.
The Eagles were led by senior transfer Janis Peterson who scored 32 points, pulled down five rebounds and collected four steals.
Five Warriors scored in double figures led by Aysia Shellmire with 20 points and 12 rebounds. Celina Gougis also had a double-double recording 13 points and 10 rebounds. Lauren McCoy and Esther Lee added 12 points each while Krissy Karr posted 11.
The Eagles’ victory snapped a seven-game win streak by the Warriors over Concordia.
The first half was closely contested with neither team holding more than a seven point advantage. The Warriors went up 40-35 when Shellmire scored on a layup with 1:07 showing on the clock. However, Peterson hit a three and followed with a layup to produce a 40-40 halftime score.
Another three by Peterson to start the second half gave the Eagles a 43-40 lead, but Westmont responded with a layups by Shellmire and McCoy to go up 44-43. Unfortunately, it was the last lead the Warriors would hold in the game.
A 12-0 run by Concordia (6-2, 2-0) established the first double-digit lead of the night and Westmont could get no closer than seven points the rest of the way.
The Warriors (7-2, 0-2 GSAC) shot just 37.5 percent from the floor (24 of 64) compared to 42.9 percent for the Eagles (27 of 63). The telling statistic on the box score was 14 steals by the Eagles with the Warriors committing 19 turnovers. Concordia was benefited by 16 points from the bench while the Warrior reserves managed just four.
