GSoc: Lynn, Saperstein lead Royals to 2-2 draw

Led by goals from Lucia Lynn and Kaitlyn Saperstein, San Marcos’ girls soccer battled to a 2-2 draw against Canyon on Tuesday night.

“The game was very physical, and to give Canyon credit, they had tremendous size and talent,” San Marcos coach Macie Berlin said. “I felt like our girls stuck to them like glue and put enough pressure on to make their goal scoring opportunities limited. “Our goalkeeper Emily Stevens really stepped up to the plate tonight and we needed that from her.”

In the 28th minute, Canyon capitalized on a messy throw-in from the Royals to take an early 1-0 lead.

At the beginning of the second half, Chloe Hamer cut the ball back after beating her defender and fed Lynn who scored her second goal of the season and equalized the game at 1-1.

With only 15 minutes remaining in the game, freshman Cate Clancy played a ball over the middle to Saperstein, who had a brilliant finish to give the Royals a 2-1 lead.

Canyon came back ferociously when its striker cut just inside of the Royals’ back line and struck the ball past Stevens’ outstretched hands to knot the score with two minutes left.

“The win would have been nice, but as a coach, I asked for specifics tonight and the team delivered. It’s hard to ask for more when a fresh group plays united, but, of course, we do want more,” added Coach Berlin.

San Marcos is 0-1-1 overall. The Royals head on the road to face off with Pacifica on Thursday.
