GSoc: Cate nets three in opener

Cate’s girls soccer team took seven minutes to score its first goal of the season and went on to defeat New Community Jewish 3-2 on Tuesday in a non-league matchup.

Victoria Herman recorded the game-winning goal for Cate, scoring off a pass from freshman Isabela Montes de Oca late in the second half.

Cate was up 1-0 and 2-1 in the game, but allowed New Community Jewish to tie at 1-1 and 2-2.

“Cate might have been content to play out the 2-2 tie, but I am pleased to say that we were most aggressive after giving up that second goal,” said Rams head coach Lisa Holmes.

Hannah Bowlin gave the Rams an early 1-0 lead when she chased down a forward pass from Charlotte Monke and scored on a contested breakaway in the seventh minute.

“Hannah had a defender practically climbing onto her back as she took control of the ball and calmly slipped it passed the NJC keeper,” described Holmes.

New Community Jewish evened the score in the first minute of the second half but Cate responded with a go-ahead goal 10 minutes later. Montes De Oca took a pass from classmate Sophie Johnson and delivered a powerful shot into the net. Montes de Oca finished with a goal and an assist in her first high school game.
