Amber Melgoza keeps rewriting the Santa Barbara High girls basketball record book.
Melgoza eclipsed her single-game scoring record for the second time in four days, pouring in 48 points in the Dons’ 71-39 victory over Atascadero in the championship game of the Harold Oliveira Tournament at Righetti High. Her previous high was 47 points, which scored in a first-round win Saturday against Sierra-Tollhouse.
Melgoza made 23 of 33 shots in the championship game. She averaged 44 points in the tournament.
Jada Howard played a strong game, scoring 13 points, grabbing eight rebounds, dishing out six assists and forcing Atascadero into turnovers on the press.
“She was running the press the best she’s ever run it,” Dons coach Andrew Butcher said of Howard. “She had a real solid game. As Jada goes, usually so goes Amber. They play really well together.”
Jocelin Petatan ran the offense and dished out nine assists. Sophia Torres had a productive game with seven steals and six rebounds.
With its second tournament title, the Dons improve to 12-3 on the season.
