San Marcos posted a big boys soccer win on Monday, beating previously undefeated Pacifica, 2-1, at Warkentin Stadium.
Tony Garcia scored in the 20th minute and Jake Castanha buried a shot in the final seconds of the first half for a 2-0 lead.
Pacifica stepped up its game in the second half, but the Royals played solid defense in the midfield and in the back.
The Tritons broke through late in the second half and earned a penalty kick. But San Marcos goalkeeper Kai Faulkner came up big and stopped the shot.
Pacifica did get on the board off a corner kick that was flicked in at the near post.
San Marcos held on for the victory.
“This is a big win and sets the tone for our season,” San Marcos coach Rob Lauderdale said. “I know these boys can compete with anyone. I am so happy for these guys. They’ve been working hard and it’s great to see them beat a very good team in Pacifica.”
