Christian Herman scored in the 9th minute, and the goal was all Cate would need to win its season-opening boys soccer match, 1-0, over St. Bonaventure on Thursday.
Herman placed a left-footed shot from 10 yards out into the lower right corner. Geoffrey Acheampong started the sequence by sliding a through ball to Iman Fardghassemi on the right side of the box. Fardghassemi zipped a low, hard ball across the box to Herman who timed his run perfectly.
The Rams dominated play for the most of the game, outshooting the Seraphs 22-7.
St. Bonaventure threatened late in the match, forcing Cate keeper Keller Mochel into three terrific saves, said coach Peter Mack.
“As the game wore on, we established a better sense of how we want to play. But this was the first game and we’re still figuring out a few things: the timing of runs, where to be and when, finishing, etcetera,” Mack said. “But I liked our effort and the growth I saw in just the 80 minutes we were out there.”
