Kelsie Bryant’s decorated high school career came to an end on Friday as the Carpinteria senior fell in the Round of 16 at the Southern Section’s CIF Individual Tournament played in Seal Beach.
Bryant fell to Laguna Beach’s Summer Dvorak 6-7, 6-1, 6-2. Bryant won the first set by going for her shots and producing many winners, especially from her forehand, according to coach Charles Bryant. The tiebreak score was 7-3.
“Unfortunately, the second set took a different turn and although Kelsie was still trying to be aggressive, she was missing a bit more than normal and her shots were starting to lack the depth that they had in the first set,” Bryant said.
Dvorak was able to break Bryant’s serve early in each of the second and third sets on her way to victory.
“Both Kelsie and Summer played really well the first time they met a month ago but this time they both played even better and upped their games much more,” Bryant said. “It was just a high quality match with two high quality girls going toe to toe.”
Dvorak went on to win her next match and advanced to Monday’s semifinals. The CIF Individual Tournament includes players from all divisions in the Southern Section.
Bryant won four individual league championships as a Warrior and led the team to two CIF titles and three CIF finals appearances.
“The years went by so quickly and it is rather sad right now to think about not seeing her play for Carpinteria HS,” Bryant noted. “She loved playing alongside her teammates and for the high school and together they made some history.”
