Laguna Blanca opened its boys soccer season with an impressive 4-0 non-league win over Thacher on Saturday.
The Owls scored two goals in each half. Sam Brown opened the scoring in the 15th minute and Luke Smillie made it 2-0 in the 30th minute. Ryan Bickett (49th) and Jack Espy (72nd) scored in the second half.
“The game was way better than I expected,” Laguna coach Daniel Torres said. “The boys were ready to play, but I didn’t expect them to play like they did today. There were a lot of positives.”
Laguna Blanca received a boost from Stephen McCaffery. He was called upon on short notice to fill in for the team’s regular goalkeeper, who is finishing his club season.
“He did a phenomenal job. He looked like a natural out there,” Torres said of the standout quarterback, who was playing goalie for the first time.
