Stephen McCaffery didn’t drive the bus to San Jacinto on Saturday for Laguna Blanca’s Division 1 8-man football playoff opener.
That’s about the only thing the senior didn’t do. McCaffery accounted for nine touchdowns in the Owls’ 66-44 victory over San Jacinto Valley Academy. As a quarterback, he rushed for six TDS and passed for another. On defense, he returned two interceptions for scores.
The first-round victory sets up a home quarterfinal game against top-seeded Thacher next weekend. A site and day will be determined early in the week. Thacher beat Laguna Blanca, 60-24, in a Condor League game a week ago.
McCaffery scored as soon as he got off the bus, breaking loose for a 54-yard run on the first play from scrimmage. The Owls (6-3) never trailed in the game. They led 38-28 at halftime.
Pierce O’Donnell caught the touchdown pass from McCaffery. On defense, Isaac Baron forced a fumble that the Owls would capitalize on.
This is the second straight year Laguna Blanca has won a first-round playoff game.
