Cate proved on Tuesday that it could not be beaten in its first season in the Frontier League, winning its 12th-straight league match without a loss in a 25-12, 25-14, 25-19 decision over Carpinteria.
“The team was pretty pumped tonight because they wanted a perfect record on the season, and they pulled it off with a 12-0 record,” explained Rams head coach Greg Novak.
It was a positive setting for Senior Night as Maddie Becker, Xandrine Griffin, and Sumner Matthews were recognized for Cate.
Delaney Mayfield and Becker led the team with 11 kills each. Peyton Shelburne had 10.
In the back, defenders Matthews and Hannah Bowlin made dig after dig.
“They are in relentless pursuit of the ball at all times. They will knock each other over to be the first person to the ball. It’s fun to watch what they can do and how well they can execute defensive plays,” Novak described.
Cate, the No. 1-ranked team in CIF Division 4A, awaits playoffs.
“The varsity team was well focused and gave it their best effort,” Carpinteria coach Dino Garcia said. “Cate performed consistent, as expected, and severed aggressively throughout the match, not letting Carpinteria dial in their passing.”
Outside hitter Miranda Marquez had seven kills and Shannon Callaway added six kills and four digs to lead Carpinteria. Senior middle blocker Jamie Brooks had two blocks and three kills, and middle Teagan Singer added two kills and one block. Adriana Morales, who was setter for sets two and three, had 14 assists.
